Spigot Freeze PreventerAbout the Spigot Freeze Preventer™

The patented Spigot Freeze Preventer™ was developed primarily to help prevent water systems (spigots, pipes, pumps, tanks, etc.) from freezing and bursting during low temperatures, while keeping in mind that it needed to be compact, easy to use, and affordable for every homeowner and business.

The SFP has a female end connector, which can be attached to any water spigot, "Y" hose connector, and/or water hose end having a male end connection in a matter of seconds. In the event a spigot is located on a porch or patio, a short section of water hose with the SFP attached to the male end of the water hose can be used to divert the water to a more appropriate place. The water pressure can be turned on to maximum flow without affecting the drip rate of the SFP. This permits you to use this spigot location for other purposes when the SFP is attached to a "Y" hose connector, such as a garden hose.

The SFP is easy to install and simple to operate. Almost anyone in the family and/or the neighbors can do it without a lot of instructions. In the event you are away from home when a freeze warning is predicted in your home area, you can call your neighbor to go over to your house and just turn your spigots on to maximum flow and walk away leaving them dripping and not worry about them again until the freeze warning is lifted.

How to Use

The SFP can be attached to any water spigot, a “Y” hose connector, or end of a short section of water hose when diverting water off your patio and/or deck. Water hoses must have a positive drainage slope to keep water from freezing in a sag in your hose. Keep water hose as short as possible when used in the winter time for diverting water off patios and/or decks.

The SFP does not have any movable mechanical parts triggered by fluctuations in water temperature, air temperature, and/or air pressure. Accordingly, the probability that the SFP will fail due to mechanical fatigue is reduced. In addition, the SFP allows a user to keep theirs spigots turned on at the maximum flow at all times without effecting the SFP's drip rate. The need to manually adjust the drip rate of the spigots on and off during cold temperatures to achieve the minimum drip rate required to prevent freezing thereof is eliminated.

NOTE: If the temperature falls below 32° Fahrenheit, your pipes may be vulnerable to freezing. It is suggested that you leave the SFP device on your spigot at all times during the winter months and turn your spigot on maximum flow when the temperature is predicted to fall below 32° Fahrenheit for more than three (3) hours. Again, you must turn your spigot on to maximum flow to protect your pipes.

It is not recommended that any SFP be used in areas where the temperature may fall below -10° Fahrenheit. Extreme care must be taken when using the SFP in extremely cold climates, and/or on extended sections of exposed pipes or water hoses. For these conditions, use either one (1) SFP-0.5 (1/2 gallon per hour) device and one (1) SFP-01 (1 gallon per hour) device, or two (2) SFP-01 (1 gallon per hour) devices on a "Y" hose connector.

Before attaching the SFP you will need to make sure that there is no ice or slush in your spigot, water line and/or water hose. If there is, then you will need to flush it out prior to installing the SFP. If ice has formed in your SFP, you will need to thaw it out in warm water before installing it on your spigot. This thawing process normally only takes about one (1) minute.

General Guidelines

  • SFP-0.5: Use one (1) device on spigots that are flush with the side of the building and/or with no more than three (3) feet of exposed pipes outside or under the building.
  • SFP-01: Use one (1) device on spigots with no more than nine (9) feet of exposed pipes outside or under the building. In extremely cold climates (below 0° Fahrenheit) and/or with longer exposed pipes you may need to use two (2) devices on a “Y” hose connector.

Fully Lab Tested

We successfully completed our SFP product testing on April 23, 2003, at East-West Technology in Jupiter, FL. All SFPs continued to function properly even after -16° Fahrenheit was reached. We determined that -16° Fahrenheit was about as low as it was practicable to go with these devices; therefore, we terminated the testing.

We brought the temperature down to four (4) different levels and held them there for two (2) hours at each level with thirty (30) minutes transition time between each level. Listed below is a schedule of the testing procedure showing the device tested and the length, type and size of pipe used and the temperatures successfully reached (TSR).
